Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced that Felipe Calderón, President of Mexico, will conduct a visit to Canada May 26 to 28.
"It is an honour to welcome President Calderón to Canada," said Prime Minister Harper. "This visit underscores the strong and enduring friendship between Canada and Mexico, and I look forward to building on this strategic relationship later this month."
Prime Minister Harper will meet with President Calderón in Ottawa to discuss Canada and Mexico's deep and multifaceted bilateral relationship and common challenges in the continent and hemisphere. Mexico is a partner with Canada in North America, a key ally for Canada's engagement in the Americas and an important interlocutor multilaterally.
President Calderón will also address Parliament, pay a courtesy call on Governor General Michaëlle Jean and meet with the Leader of the Opposition.
Canada-Mexico economic relations have strengthened significantly since the NAFTA entered into force in 1994. Canada and Mexico are now among each others' largest trading partners, while Canada has become a major foreign investor in Mexico. People-to-people links are also significant, with over one million Canadians visiting Mexico and almost 200,000 Mexicans travelling to Canada annually.
