The Lheidli T’enneh First Nation can look forward to new and improved recreational amenities thanks to an investment of $80,000 from the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“These upgrades will ensure that our aboriginal communities have access to the modern and essential infrastructure they need today and in the future,
” said the Honourable Jay Hill, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Member of Parliament for Prince George-Peace River, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.
Funding will construct a new sports facility to serve as a hockey rink in the winter and basketball court in the off-season. Existing playground equipment will also be replaced. Improvements will increase the variety of social and physical activities available to aboriginal youth and families in the area.
“Our current playground facilities are not meeting the community’s or the children’s’ needs. This project is something that has been requested for a number of years and we are very happy to be able to deliver in its completion with the help of Western Economic Diversification,
” said Chief Dominic Frederick of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation.
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. In total, WD has approved 718 RInC projects that will use all of the funding available in the West. These projects are helping provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
