Chemainus, British Columbia
The Chemainus Community Schools’ Association is celebrating the completion of a new outdoor fitness circuit path, thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“Through support of projects like this one, the Government of Canada is not only creating jobs, but is also providing opportunities for free recreational activities in communities like Chemainus,” said Dr. James Lunney, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo-Alberni, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.
The Government of Canada provided $33,000 in support toward the installation of fitness stations along a multi-use path that borders the local elementary school. The Association is celebrating the project’s completion with equipment demonstrations and a “fitness circuit challenge” that encourages users to regularly participate in physical activity.
“In a small town like Chemainus, people know each other well. Now, with this new fitness equipment, we are getting to know each other really well, as we huff and puff side by side, getting into shape! Chemainiacs of many different ages are loving their new circuit! By contributing to this project, western Economic Diversification Canada has supported a small Canadian business; delayed lay-offs and increased working hours in a field burdened by cutbacks, and created a brand-new part-time job in the not-for-profit sector. Citizens have a unique opportunity for healthy activity and are modelling positive habits for their kids!; It’s a win-win,” said Wendy Lambert, Coordinator, Chemainus Community School’s Association.
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. In total, Western Economic Diversification Canada has approved 718 RInC projects that will use all of the funding available in the West. These projects are helping provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
