Residents of the Town of Battleford gathered today to celebrate the start of construction for the Battleford reservoir and water treatment plant expansion. Representatives from all orders of government were in attendance.
The construction of the water treatment plant and reservoir expansion will provide much needed additional storage and treatment capacity, supplying the town of Battleford with sufficient quantities of potable water. As well, this new system has the potential to expand, to meet the future needs of the community.
“Our Government is proud to contribute to this project which will provide the residents of Battleford with a safe and reliable water supply,
” said Agriculture Minister and MP Gerry Ritz (Battlefords-Lloydminster), on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.
The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan contributed joint federal-provincial funding of $3,180,000 under the Building Canada Fund - Communities Component, while the Town of Battleford contributed the remainder of funds.
“Renewing and rebuilding Saskatchewan’s infrastructure is a priority for the provincial government,
” Lloydminster MLA Tim McMillan said, on behalf of Municipal Affairs Minister Jeremy Harrison. “The town’s residents will be well-served by the new Battleford water treatment plant for many years to come.”
“Sustainability is the capacity to endure. The Town of Battleford with the assistance of the Building Canada Fund- Communities Component now has the capacity to offer present and future residents and businesses a sufficient supply of quality water,
” said Mayor Chris Odishaw. “The Town of Battleford now has the capacity to grow and to help foster growth within the region.
”
Thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of $227.4 million, this project is one of 148 projects across the province breaking ground quickly. Together with municipal contributions, the total investment in local infrastructure improvements in Saskatchewan under the Building Canada Fund -- Communities Component exceeds $341 million.
