Prime Minister Stephen Harper today called Alvaro Uribe, President of Colombia, to discuss the upcoming G-8 Summit.
President Uribe, along with Jamaican Prime Minister Golding and Haitian President Préval, will be in Hunstville to participate in an Extended Outreach session with G-8 and African leaders.
Prime Minister Harper shared his goals for the session, in particular noting the success President Uribe has had in combating organized crime and terrorist insurgency, while at the same time strengthening his country's democratic institutions.
President Uribe thanked Prime Minister Harper for inviting him to the G-8 to share the Colombian experience.
President Uribe also expressed his gratitude for the recent passage of the Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement through the Parliament of Canada. The bill is now awaiting Royal Assent. President Uribe remarked that the trade deal was being celebrated by Colombians.
