Blackville, New Brunswick
Representatives of the Governments of Canada and New Brunswick joined local residents today to officially open the Blackville Community Centre. The facility which houses recreation and business space is designed to help foster economic and social activity in the community. Tilly O’Neill-Gordon, Member of Parliament for Miramichi, the Honourable Rick Brewer, Minister of Human Resources and Minister responsible for the Aboriginal Affairs Secretariat, and His Worship Glen Hollowood, Mayor of Blackville, were on hand for the event.
“Our government, through the Economic Action Plan, is taking steps to stimulate the economies of communities hard hit by the recent economic downturn,” said MP O’Neill- Gordon on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. “This investment has assisted the community of Blackville in constructing a multifunctional centre that will serve as the new home for business development, recreation, and social space for all members of the community to use.”
“Today's celebration of the new community facility truly shows that our government can work with other levels of government to help better our communities," said Brewer, on behalf of Business New Brunswick Minister Victor Boudreau, who is also Minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. "Our investment will ensure this facility continues to play a vital role in the life of the community of Blackville and the Miramichi region.”
“On behalf of our community, I would like to thank the Governments of Canada and New Brunswick for their investment, which is sure to improve the quality of life for our citizens,” said Mayor Hollowood. “This Centre will serve our business community, as well as provide a gathering place for social events for members of our community.
The Centre provides a meeting place for various groups in the area. The business community will have access to a large multi-functional room where they can conduct training and conferences. A computer access area is available to help local unemployed workers prepare for and seek employment.
The Governments of Canada and New Brunswick have each contributed $350,000, for a total of $700,000. The Village of Blackville provided $404,306 for completion of the project.
