PICTOU, Nova Scotia, July 8, 2010 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament (Central Nova), today announced funding for eight community newspapers in central Nova Scotia.
"Our Government is proud to support, through the Canada Periodical Fund, content that promotes Canadian ideas, history, and culture," said Minister Moore. "We are committed to preserving our heritage and promoting our values to keep our identity strong, now and in the future."
"I am very pleased to be a part of a Government that supports the growth of local community newspapers serving the central Nova Scotia area," said Minister MacKay. "These federal funds ensure that our newspapers remain a vibrant source of information for years to come."
For newspapers in the riding of Central Nova, the Government of Canada has provided funding of:
- $50,650 to The Pictou Advocate
- $45,650 to The Casket
- $8,961 to The Atlantic Catholic
Additionally, the Government of Canada has provided funding of:
- $44,389 to The Port Hawkesbury Reporter
- $33,281 to The Weekly Press
- $17,748 to The Sackville Tribune Post
- $11,857 to The Amherst Citizen
- $10,099 to The Record
The Government of Canada has provided this total funding in the amount of $222,635 under the Aid to Publishers component of the Canada Periodical Fund (CPF). The Fund invests in periodicals like these to help increase the overall health of the Canadian magazine and non-daily newspaper industries. The Aid to Publishers component works to ensure that Canadians can continue to have access to the Canadian content they want from paid or request circulation magazines and community newspapers and provides those titles with the support they need to respond to a complex marketplace. This component provides greater flexibility for publishers to invest where needed in creation, production, marketing, distribution, and Web and digital development.
The CPF, which was created following public consultations, replaces two former programs: the Publications Assistance Program and the Canada Magazine Fund.
