THORNHILL, Ontario, August 10, 2010 - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, the Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas) and Member of Parliament (Thornhill), today announced funding for R.K. Publishing for a business-planning project.
"Our Government is committed to helping Canadian book publishers thrive in a digital environment," said Minister Moore. "Not only do these investments make sense economically, but they also help businesses develop and grow and they ensure that a wide variety of Canadian stories and voices continue to be heard."
"This funding will enable R. K. Publishing to grow its business and improve Canadians' access to high-quality French-language educational books written by Canadian authors," said Minister of State Kent.
"Freedom of choice is something that Canadians value greatly, and teachers are no different--they want a variety of materials to choose from for teaching French as a second language," said Ruby Kaplan, President of R.K. Publishing. "We are a small Canadian company filling this need in a bilingual and unique country and will continue to do so thanks to the assistance of the Government of Canada."
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $32,990 through the Support for Publishers funding stream of the Canada Book Fund (CBF). The principal objective of the CBF is to ensure access to a diverse range of Canadian-authored books in Canada and abroad. The Fund seeks to achieve this objective by fostering a viable Canadian book industry that publishes and markets Canadian-authored books.
CBF funding is organized under two streams: Support for Publishers, which brings together all funding opportunities for book publishers, and Support for Organizations, which brings together all funding opportunities for non-publisher organizations operating in the book industry. Business-planning projects offered through Support for Publishers help recipients develop strategic approaches to key challenges. Surmounting these challenges will improve recipients' capacity to manage business activities and ensure the competitiveness of their organizations.
