Moosomin, Saskatchewan
Souris-Moose Mountain Member of Parliament Ed Komarnicki and Speaker of the Legislature and Moosomin MLA Don Toth turned sod today at Lloyd Bradley Park with Town of Moosomin Mayor Don Bradley to kick off construction to the town's new multipurpose recreation centre.
The facility will adjoin the Communiplex arena and replace the badly deteriorated existing community centre, located near McNaughton High School. The entire complex will be referred to as the Moosomin Communiplex and Convention Centre (MCC Centre).
The new recreation centre will create a safer environment for users and result in lower operating and maintenance costs for the town. It will meet the demands of the region's growing population and be better equipped to offer more physical activity programming.
"Our government is excited to see construction starting on so many of our Economic Action Plan projects," said MP Komarnicki, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification. "I'm particularly excited to see construction started here in Moosomin with shovels in the ground. Moosomin's new multi-purpose recreation centre will strengthen the community for generations to come."
"The Government of Saskatchewan understands the importance of providing increased opportunities for people to celebrate their communities in a safe and engaging setting," said MLA Toth, on behalf of Municipal Affairs Minister Darryl Hickie. "This new multi-purpose facility will contribute to a better quality of life for the citizens of Moosomin and visitors alike."
"We are extremely excited to be breaking sod on the new Moosomin Communiplex and Convention Centre," said Mayor Don Bradley. "The new MCC Centre will allow our Parks and Recreation Department the flexibility to improve on existing programming as well as add a multitude of new programs never before possible in our existing facilities."
The Government of Canada contributed $553,000 while the Government of Saskatchewan contributed $750,000 through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The Town of Moosomin contributed $997,000 to the $2.3 million project.
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. In total, Western Economic Diversification Canada has approved 718 RInC projects that will use all of the funding available in the West. These projects are helping provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
