Kimmirut, Nunavut, September 16, 2010 — A joint investment by the governments of Canada and Nunavut toward the construction of a new sewage lagoon for wastewater treatment in Kimmirut will ensure the availability of safe, clean water for local residents.
“Our Government is dedicated to improving the quality of life for residents of Kimmirut and Nunavut as a whole,” said the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, MP for Nunavut, Minister of Health and Minister Responsible for the North. “By partnering with the Government of Nunavut, we are improving the essential wastewater system in the community while creating jobs and stimulating the local economy.”
“This important infrastructure investment will benefit the community of Kimmirut for years to come,” said the Honourable Lorne Kusugak, Minister of Community and Government Services. “The rehabilitation of the Kimmirut sewage lagoon and corresponding access roads will provide the Municipality with a sustainable and safer method of wastewater treatment. The funding of this important initiative was made possible by use of the Provincial-Territorial Base Fund administered through Infrastructure Canada.”
The Provincial-Territorial Base Fund is part of the Building Canada Plan and is designed to provide investments in key infrastructure in Nunavut for core infrastructure priorities such as water, wastewater, green energy, regional and community airports, and safe roads.
The Government of Nunavut is working closely with the Government of Canada to ensure that infrastructure funds are spent on priorities throughout the territory. Since 2007, approximately $142.6 million has been committed across Nunavut toward initiatives under the PT Base Fund, with close to $107 million coming from the Government of Canada alone.
Across all of its funds, Infrastructure Canada has now committed approximately $10.2 billion toward over 6,100 infrastructure projects as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. When combined with the contributions of our funding partners, there is close to $30.5 billion committed to infrastructure projects across the country.
