Ottawa, September 17, 2010 — The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement recognizing Yom Kippur:
“Today is the beginning of what many consider to be the holiest day of the Jewish year.
“Yom Kippur is the second of the High Holidays and the end of a 10-day period of time set aside to focus on introspection and repentance.
“Known as the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur is a time to atone for the sins of the past year. It is also a time of rest, reflection and renewal for Jewish people, who observe the day by fasting, praying, attending synagogue and refraining from work.
“This important holiday provides an excellent opportunity for all Canadians to reflect on the tremendous contributions that members of the Jewish community have made to this country’s rich and diverse heritage.
“As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes to Jewish people as they observe this solemn and sacred holiday.”
“Gemar chatima tovah.”
