OTTAWA, September 24, 2010 - Do you know what your neighbours are up to?
It can be a shocking wake-up call: a secret lab making meth and ecstasy...right on a residential street. These "clandestine labs," producing huge batches of illegal synthetic drugs, are operating in neighbourhoods all over Canada.
Just this week, (Thursday, September 23), it was announced that the RCMP seized 200,000 ecstasy tablets in British Columbia.
"An entire community is put at risk," says Sgt. Doug Culver, the RCMP's National Synthetic Drug Coordinator. "The flammable solvents, acids and other poisonous and caustic chemicals used pose a risk of fire or explosion, and the criminality and violence that accompanies these labs is suddenly present on a once-quiet street."
"Clandestine Drug Labs in Your Neighbourhood," a 15-minute video produced by the RCMP's Drug Branch, shows the viewer the deplorable conditions within these labs, and features interviews with young people who's lives have been forever changed by the drugs they produce.
Ecstasy and meth are popular among youth at parties and raves, but most would be shocked to know the ingredients these kinds of drugs can contain. These drugs are toxic, addictive and potentially lethal; it's vital that our communities are aware of this threat to help protect our children.
