A Canada-Quebec partnership of more than $4.1 million
Saint-Philémon, Quebec, October 15, 2010 – Steven Blaney, Member of Parliament for Lévis-Bellechasse, on behalf of the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, and Dominique Vien, Minister for Social Services and Member of the National Assembly for Bellechasse, on behalf of Laurent Lessard, Minister of Municipal Affairs, Regions and Land Occupancy, and Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, today participated at the inauguration of an important project for the improvement of water and sewer infrastructure in the Massif du Sud sector.
"Access to healthy and clean water is essential to building strong and prosperous Canadian communities," said MP Blaney. "Our Government is proud to partner with our provincial and municipal partners to support this work, which will promote job creation for Quebecers and stimulate the local economy for years to come."
"This long awaited infrastructure project in Saint-Philémon is an important gain for the whole riding of Bellechasse. Not only will residents and resort vacationers benefit from a better quality of life thanks to these investments, they will also contribute to sustainable development. This is excellent news," stated the MNA for Bellechasse, Dominique Vien.
The governments of Canada and Quebec are jointly contributing $4,122,700 to this project. With the contribution of $2,061,349 from the Municipality of Saint-Philémon, this project represents a total cost of $6,184,049.
This project will have an important impact on the regional economy and the growth of tourism potential in the region. The work will ensure the supply to and upgrading of drinking water and wastewater systems, as well as the installation of new water, sewage and road infrastructure in the sector of Massif du Sud.
The Government of Canada's contribution of close to $2 million comes from the $4 billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, which was set up under Canada's Economic Action Plan. This Fund has provided funding for nearly 4,000 infrastructure projects across Canada. The Government of Canada has set aside up to $936 million of this Fund for projects in Quebec.
The Government of Quebec's contribution of more than $2 million is being made under Quebec's infrastructure plan, le Plan québécois des infrastructures, which was enhanced in January 2009 and will provide nearly $42 billion for infrastructure renewal in Quebec over the next five years.
