Tantallon, Nova Scotia, October 15, 2010 – Construction of two new fire stations in the Halifax Regional Municipality will ensure that the communities of Tantallon/Hubley, Herring Cove, and surrounding areas will continue to receive good service and fast response times in case of an emergency.
Gerald Keddy, Member of Parliament for South Shore – St. Margaret's, the Honourable Bill Estabrooks, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, and His Worship, Peter J Kelly, Mayor of the Halifax Regional Municipality, today gathered to mark progress in the construction of two new fire stations in the Halifax Regional Municipality, serving the communities of Hubley, Tantallon, Herring Cove and surrounding areas. The new buildings will be four-bay composite stations with a mix of full-time and volunteer firefighters. Both stations are home to an engine, tanker and rescue unit, and have two full-time staff. There is potential for future expansion.
"Public infrastructure, like the fire stations serving these communities, cannot be taken for granted. We need to be aware of and adapt to changing regional needs," said MP Keddy, on behalf of the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. "The contribution from our government towards the construction of these two new modern facilities is indicative of their important place in the community."
"These new fire stations will help enhance fire protection in the growing communities of Herring Cove, Hubley, Tantallon and surrounding area," said Minister Estabrooks, on behalf of the Honourable Ramona Jennex, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. "Our investment will help make life safer for families and businesses."
Speaking on behalf of Halifax Regional Council, Mayor Kelly noted that all three levels of government have cooperated to make these fire stations a reality. "I can't think of any better example of making the maximum use of government's energy and resources than in ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens, he said. Council will continue to cooperate with senior government wherever and whenever possible to build more facilities like these to ensure healthy, safe, and vibrant communities."
The Government of Canada will contribute up to $1 million to each of these projects under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund. The Province of Nova Scotia and the Halifax Regional Municipality will match the federal contribution. The total eligible cost for each project is $3 million.
As part of the Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan, the $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund is providing funding to close to 4,000 infrastructure projects across the country.
Since 2009, Canada and Nova Scotia have announced nearly $220 million in joint funding for more than one hundred infrastructure projects across the province to stimulate the economy and create jobs.
