Fire Suppression System
CanNor Funding: $80,000
The Klondike Visitors Association (KVA) will receive an investment of $80,000 from the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The funding is for the installation of a fire suppression system to meet building code requirements for Diamond Tooth Gerties, located in Dawson City. This project will create employment opportunities and improve the safety at one of Yukon’s most popular attractions and community social venues.
Investments in this project will support a fire suppression system for a new addition at the venue. As well, upgrades will be made to the existing fire suppression systems in the main hall. The new addition to Gerties is part of a larger expansion and structural rehabilitation program which began in 2008 by the KVA. This funding will ensure Diamond Tooth Gerties continues to operate in a safe manner.
The KVA is a not-for-profit, community-based organization whose mandate is to promote Dawson City, the Klondike region and Yukon to national and international tourists. KVA operates a number of tourism organizations, including Diamond Tooth Gerties. Gerties is an entertainment venue that also functions as a local social venue for residents of both Dawson and regional communities and also serves as a venue for fundraising for local charitable organizations.
The Government of Canada’s investment is made through CanNor’s Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The fund will provide $32.8 million across the North over two years.
The CAF is part of a suite of economic development programs that fall under the mandate of CanNor in Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering federal economic development activities in the territories, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
