Ottawa, Ontario - The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, honoured the efforts of harbour authority volunteers last night at the Small Craft Harbours Prix d'Excellence ceremony.
"Our Government understands that small craft harbours are the heart and soul of coastal communities across Canada," said Minister Shea. "That is why we have made the largest investments in small craft harbours in a generation – and why I am so pleased to partner with harbour authority volunteers for their efforts to keep harbours well-maintained for the thousands of Canadians whose livelihoods depend on them."
The Prix d'Excellence is awarded annually to celebrate the exemplary contributions made by Harbour Authorities in meeting the objectives of the Small Craft Harbours Program. The award recognizes teams and individuals who have made significant contributions to their harbours and their communities.
This year's group award for National Harbour Authority Achievement was awarded to the Harbour Authority of Bayfield, Maritimes and Gulf Regions. It was accepted by Austin Boudreau. National Individual Commitment awards were presented to: Elizabeth McLeod, Comox Valley Harbour Authority, Pacific Region; Raoul Grenier, Harbour Authority of Newport, Quebec Region; Paul-Aimé Mallet, Harbour Authority of Le Goulet; Maritimes and Gulf Regions Maureen Fleming, Harbour Authority of Lamaline; Newfoundland and Labrador Region and David Tomasson, Hecla Village Harbour Authority, Central and Arctic Region.
"On behalf of our Government and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, I offer my sincere thanks and congratulations to this year's recipients," said Minister Shea. "The Small Craft Harbours Program would not be as successful without the support and continued devotion of these committed volunteers."
