OTTAWA — The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today delivered a keynote speech to public- and private-sector partners in the sustainable transportation sector at the Association for Commuter Transportation (ACT) of Canada's Sustainable Mobility Summit 2010.
"The Government of Canada recognizes the value of efficient and sustainable urban transit," said Minister Strahl. "We understand the important contribution it makes to quality of life in Canadian cities by reducing traffic congestion, as well as protecting the health of Canadians, benefiting the environment and stimulating our economy."
Minister Strahl also highlighted some of the Government of Canada's major funding initiatives that are supporting efficient and sustainable urban transit improvements as well as other measures to enable Canadians to take advantage of green transportation alternatives. "We are working with our partners to help more Canadians switch gears when it comes to their daily commute," added Minister Strahl.
The Sustainable Mobility Summit 2010 is a four-day conference involving Canadian and international participants. The theme of this year's summit is "Transforming our Communities." The conference will explore sustainable mobility as a key component of human and ecosystem health, economic growth, transportation efficiency and quality of life in urban communities.
