Canning, Nova Scotia
The 35-year-old Glooscap District Arena in Canning will soon undergo major renovations, thanks to support provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a key economic stimulus initiative contained in the Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan.
"Our Government's investment of $100,000 in the Glooscap Arena, through Canada's Economic Action Plan, will support much needed renovations to the facility and increase the safety, sustainability, and viability of the building," said Senator Kelvin Ogilvie on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. "Our investment will contribute to local economic activity, support local jobs during the project's renovation phase and ensure area residents continue to have access to a valuable community facility for years to come."
The investment will allow the Canning District Recreational Commission to complete upgrades necessary to meet building code and insurance guidelines. Work will include the creation of a tractor storage room, repairs to the arena's electrical and mechanical systems, renovation of the facility's washrooms, and the installation of dehumidifiers.
In addition to Government of Canada support, the Province of Nova Scotia made an investment of $180,000 and the Municipality of the County of Kings invested an additional $80,000 in the project.
"The province is proud to support upgrades to Glooscap District Arena," said MLA Jim Morton, on behalf of Maureen MacDonald, Minister of Health Promotion and Protection. "Providing safe, modern recreation facilities creates more opportunities to be active and makes life better for families across Nova Scotia."
"This facility is relied on and enjoyed year-round by the people of this area," said Diana Brothers, Warden for the Municipality of the County for Kings. "An improved facility boosts the local economy and offers a desirable venue for sporting events and other community activities."
"We welcome more than 1600 people to the arena each week for hockey, skating, hockey, flea markets, and many other community events," said Dave Morton, President of the Canning District Recreation Commission. "This investment will benefit the whole community."
Through the Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada is providing a timely, targeted, stimulus to communities in Nova Scotia to help reduce the impacts of the recent global economic downturn. Since taking office in February 2006, the Government of Canada, through ACOA, has announced investments totaling nearly $320 million in 546 projects throughout Nova Scotia.
