Township of Stone Mills, Ontario, December 3, 2010 – With support from the governments of Canada and Ontario, the Township of Stone Mills officially opened its new municipal garage and office building today.
The new facility features storage space for equipment and vehicles, a designated area for repairs and maintenance work, and municipal administration office space. It also incorporates a number of environmental safeguards and green technologies, including upgraded fuel tanks and a fuel consumption monitoring system.
"This new municipal garage will help Stone Mills continue to carry out its excellent work serving residents," said MP Scott Reid, on behalf of the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. "The Government of Canada is pleased to contribute to this new building, and recognizes the importance of well-built municipal facilities such as this one that streamline services and respect the environment."
"The infrastructure investments we're making through our Open Ontario Plan are building stronger, more successful rural communities," said the Honourable Carol Mitchell, Ontario's Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. "This modern facility will help Stone Mills provide high-quality, environmentally responsible municipal services for years to come."
"As a municipality, we feel this facility will allow for more efficient delivery of service to our ratepayers, ensure health and safety compliance for its employees and demonstrate environmentally sound long term planning for the future of the Township of Stone Mills," said Debbie Thompson, outgoing Reeve of the Township of Stone Mills.
The governments of Canada and Ontario have each committed up to $833,550 under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund. The Township of Stone Mills is contributing the remaining costs. The total eligible project cost is about $2.5 million.
As part of the Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan, the $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund is providing funding to nearly 4,000 infrastructure projects across the country.
The contribution from the Province of Ontario comes from its 2009 provincial budget that is supporting more than 300,000 jobs and strengthening Ontario's economy.
Since 2007, the governments of Canada and Ontario have committed more than $13 billion in funding to over 6,400 infrastructure projects across the province.
On December 2, 2010, the Government of Canada announced it is extending the construction deadline for a number of Economic Action Plan infrastructure projects. Proponents of projects under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, the Building Canada Fund Communities Component Top-Up, the Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program and the Knowledge Infrastructure Program will now have until October 31, 2011 to complete their projects.
