Loreburn, Saskatchewan
The Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, joined Loreburn Mayor Bruce Hagen to drop the official puck at a Junior Novice hockey game to celebrate the opening of the renovated Loreburn Rink.
Loreburn was able to upgrade its facility thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada's Economic Action Plan.
"Our Government understands that facilities like the Loreburn Rink are key to strong, healthy communities," said Minister Yelich. "This expansion has created immediate jobs, while providing local communities with an improved rink."
The Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan have each contributed $29,333 to this project through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The Village of Loreburn funded the balance for a total project cost of $88,000.
The village demolished the existing unused curling rink to add two new dressing rooms onto the hockey rink. The upgrade will benefit Loreburn and two surrounding communities as the rink is now better able to apply for and host larger arena events.
"This announcement today again shows our commitment to continue investing in needed infrastructure," said Saskatchewan Municipal Affairs Minister Darryl Hickie. "This project helps move Saskatchewan forward with greater recreational opportunities for the Village of Loreburn and surrounding communities."
"By receiving the RInC Grant funding we were able to be out with the old and in with the new," said Loreburn Mayor Bruce Hagen. "We were able to make the community a cleaner and safer place by getting rid of an older building and then replacing it with two new dressing rooms. The dressing rooms will provide more opportunities for the area to apply and host different and bigger events at the arena year round."
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program is investing $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It is providing a temporary economic stimulus that is reducing the impacts of the global downturn while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities. A total of almost $153 million in RInC funding will be invested across the four western provinces.
