Delta, British Columbia, January 7, 2011 – The Corporation of Delta held an official ribbon-cutting ceremony today to celebrate the completed renovation of its new archives building.
The former courthouse was converted for use as a joint facility for the Delta Museum and Archives Society, and the Corporation of Delta. The building will house existing municipal and community archive collections, with growth capacity for the next 20 years.
"This new archives centre will help to preserve the history and heritage of Delta for generations to come," said John Cummins MP for Delta-Richmond East, on behalf of the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. "I am pleased that taxpayers' money has been used to build this outstanding facility and remember the remarkable contribution to Delta of my friend Edgar Dunning."
"The Delta Archives project is an excellent example of how infrastructure funding can leave a lasting legacy for a community," said Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux. "The project helped create important jobs today, while preserving Delta's history long into the future."
"The federal and provincial governments' support has been instrumental in the development of the new Delta Archives," said Mayor Lois E. Jackson. "The Infrastructure Stimulus Fund enabled Delta to provide a first-class facility to our community that will house key documents vital to the preservation of Delta's long and rich history."
The specially designed, environmentally controlled facility provides services to the general public and municipal staff. The governments of Canada, British Columbia and the Corporation of Delta each provided $225,000 toward this project through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund. The total eligible costs for the project are $675,000.
As part of the Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan, the $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund has provided funding to close to 4,000 infrastructure projects across the country. Since March 2009, more than 400 projects have received a total federal investment of over $500 million under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund across British Columbia.
Since October 2008, over $5.3 billion has been committed for accelerated capital projects across British Columbia, which is estimated to generate more than 34,000 construction jobs over the life of the projects.
