Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the celebration of Christmas by Orthodox Christians and Catholics of the varied Eastern rites:
"I extend my warmest wishes to the many Canadians celebrating Christmas this week. For Orthodox Christians here in Canada and around the world celebrating Christmas, this is a time when rich cultural and faith traditions are observed.
"In recognition of our rich diversity in culture and faith, the Christmas lights on Parliament Hill in Ottawa will remain lit until January 7 – respecting these traditions, while marking a time of peace and understanding for all.
"This year, recent violence and persecution of Eastern Christians - in particular the violence against Iraqi Christians and last week's terrorist attack on a Coptic Church in Egypt - have sadly cast a dark shadow over this year's Christmas celebrations, which should be a time of peace and joy. We condemn these attacks and further threats of violence towards Eastern Christians.
"On behalf of the Government of Canada, and from my family to yours, my best wishes during this season and for the year ahead."
