The Port of Dalhousie is undertaking essential infrastructure improvements, with funding support provided by the Government of Canada, that will allow it to support the installation of a wood chip conveyor system to assist with the loading of ships.
The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, made the announcement today in Dalhousie.
“Our Government’s top priority is keeping the Canadian economy on the right track coming out of the global recession and strategic investments in projects like the Port of Dalhousie wood chip conveyor system reflect that fact,” said Minister Ashfield. “This project will play an important role in the revitalization of the Port and its success in establishing new partnerships, new growth and sustained employment in the region.”
The project involves the installation of pilings and a concrete pad capable of accommodating and supporting the towers of a wood chip conveyor system to be used to load break bulk carriers docked at the terminal. The completion of this project will, in turn, facilitate important changes planned for the West Wharf, enhancing the competitive position of the Port.
“We are very pleased with the funding support obtained through ACOA, as this will allow us to complete our structural support to accommodate our new ship loading system,” said Rheal Savoie, Vice-Chairman of the Board Port of Dalhousie. Without this financial contribution, this important economic development initiative would have been delayed causing major financial hardship. We are now expecting a first ship to be loaded by April 2011 and we are confident that this added capacity to the Port of Dalhousie will allow us to prosper for years to come. This is great news for Northern New Brunswick and the employees of the Port.”
The federal government is investing $750,000 through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund (ICF).

ACOA Keith Ashfield announced today that the federal government will commit $750,000 to help the Port install the concrete foundation on which the towers of new wood chip conveyor system will be anchored.
