VAUGHAN, ONTARIO, MARCH 17, 2011-Local seniors will continue to have the opportunity to participate in and contribute to their communities thanks to Government of Canada funding for New Horizons for Seniors Program projects.
"Seniors have made valuable contributions to building Canada and it is important that we help them to continue sharing their wisdom and skills," said Minister of State Fantino. "That is why the Government of Canada partners with local organizations that encourage seniors to lead and participate in community projects."
Minister Fantino made the announcement at the Pine York Seniors Club, which will receive $7,600 in funding for its project to replace furniture and equipment so that seniors can continue to participate in computer training, photography classes, bingo and card games.
This is one of 12 projects that, combined, will receive more than $81,000 in funding as a result of the 2010-11 Capital Assistance Call for Proposals. This funding helps non-profit organizations upgrade facilities or equipment required for existing seniors' programs and activities.
The Government of Canada is making modest enhancements to this Program. These enhancements will allow a broader array of organizations to develop a greater variety of projects to meet the changing needs of communities.

New Horizons for Seniors Program
The New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) is a federal Grants and Contributions program that supports projects led or inspired by seniors who make a difference in the lives of others and their communities. Through the NHSP, the Government of Canada encourages seniors to share their knowledge, skills and experiences to the benefit of others.
The 2010-11Capital Assistance Call for Proposals ran from August 30 to October 8, 2010 for all of Canada, except Quebec. In Quebec, the Call for Proposals opened May 3 and closed on September 17, 2010. Approved projects will receive funding to upgrade facilities or equipment required for seniors' programs and activities.
