Canso, Nova Scotia
The Town of Canso will soon be home to a new resource centre and library, thanks to support from the Government of Canada.
“The economy is our government’s top priority and we recognize that investments in community infrastructure help to build strong, vibrant communities and contribute to economic growth,” said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. “Our support for a new community resource centre and library in Canso serves the social, economic and educational needs of community residents and visitors alike.”
The investment will assist the Canso Library Resource Society in transforming a vacant commercial building into the Canso Library. The Library will be home to a variety of community initiatives including the Social Women’s Group, the Computer Access Centre, Children’s Story Hour and senior groups. The site will be equipped with meeting space, which will allow for expanded program capacity to serve local residents.
“This announcement of support lifts all our spirits and assures a successful outcome for a long-held dream to build a new library in downtown Canso,” said Renee Albrecht, Chair of the Canso Library Resource Society.
In addition to the Government of Canada’s $68,000 investment, the Town of Canso is contributing $4,958, the Canso Library Resource Society $14,452 and the Canso Lions Club $3,000. The Government of Canada’s investment is provided through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund (ICF) which focuses on investments that lead to long-term employment and economic capacity building in rural communities.
