A few moments ago, Prime Minister Harper met with President Obama on the margins of the G-8.
The two leaders focused their discussion on the Shared Vision for Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness as well as progress through the U.S.-Canada Regulatory Cooperation Council.
They discussed the progress achieved thus far that will form a new long-term partnership that will accelerate the legitimate flows of people and goods between both countries, while strengthening security and economic competitiveness.
President Obama and Prime Minister Harper agreed on the importance to move forward on the next steps, with an ambitious joint Action Plan ready this summer following public consultations.
Prime Minister Harper stated :
"The President and I are committed to pursuing a perimeter approach to enhance our security and accelerate the legitimate flow of people, goods, and services between our two countries,”
“We are pleased that discussions are on track, and we expect to have an ambitious joint Action Plan ready this summer following public consultations.”
"In the past, regulatory differences have created significant impediments to cross-border trade,”
“Through the RCC, our two countries will work together to reduce red tape and duplication, and increase regulatory transparency. This will make it easier for businesses on both sides of the border.”
