OTTAWA, ONTARIO (May 14, 2011) – The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, issued the following statement today:
“I would like to congratulate Nunavut Sivuniksavut (NS) on the opening of its impressive new facility. With the move to this building, NS now has a permanent home where I am sure students will benefit from a strong and innovative learning environment. This building is a tribute to the vision and dedication of the people who have made NS a strong organization, of which the Inuit of Nunavut should be very proud. This program does a tremendous job of helping students build lasting life skills in a positive and culturally supportive way. It is widely recognized as a best practice in Aboriginal education and a major contributor to capacity building in Nunavut.
Indian and Northern Affairs Canada is proud to be one of many partners of this program which will contribute to academic achievement for Inuit student –an essential component in helping the Arctic realize its true potential as a prosperous region within our strong, sovereign country.”
The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Member of Parliament for Nunavut, Regional Minister for the North and Minister of Health, also stated: The purchase of this building is an example of how we can all work hand-in-hand — Inuit organizations and all levels of government — to promote student success and provide enriching opportunities for Inuit learners.
