“As you may know from the recent announcement of the federal Cabinet, my title has changed from Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development to Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. Steps are also being taken to change the name of the department accordingly.
I would like to provide clarification regarding the change in the term used in my title from Indian to Aboriginal. This change better reflects the scope of my Ministerial responsibilities with respect to First Nations, Inuit and Métis. The title is more up to date and inclusive, and is consistent with our Government's focus on moving forward in our relationship with Aboriginal peoples.
The new working title has no impact on my Ministerial statutory responsibilities, and I continue to be authorized by Order in Council to act as Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians.
I want to be clear that the new working title has no impact on my responsibilities with respect to First Nations, and our Government remains committed to making progress on issues that are important to First Nations.
I look forward to continuing my duties as Minister to support First Nations, Métis, Inuit and Northerners in their efforts to improve social well-being and economic prosperity, develop healthier, more sustainable communities, and participate more fully in Canada's political, social and economic agenda.”
