The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) has invested a total of $202,634 in five projects that have helped build capacity in Nunavut's tourism sector.
Nunavut Arctic College
CanNor funding: $54,420
Arctic College is developing and launching a Tourism Hospitality Program in Nunavut. This investment is for phase 2 of their project, and contributed to the development of detailed outlines of first year courses in a planned diploma program in tourism, as well as a draft a training plan for students. As part of this work, College officials consulted with the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council and local tourism stakeholders.
Inuit Heritage Trust
CanNor funding: $50,000
This investment in the Inuit Heritage Trust (IHT) supported their Train the Trainer program. The focus was to develop entry-level training programs for those working in heritage interpretation and tourism-related activities. With this training, people who possess specialized knowledge of local culture, heritage and attractions have been able to train others involved in tourism in their communities and across the territory.
As part of this program, trainers learned how to manage heritage and cultural collections and resources; design exhibits, undertake strategic planning and fundraising, and create products for tourists such as books, CDs, DVDs and websites.
Hamlet of Kugluktuk
CanNor funding: $44,640
The Hamlet of Kugluktuk is considering building a Visitor and Culture Centre. To determine the feasibility of this project, the hamlet hired a consultant to conduct a study and prepare a plan for the centre's organization, function, and operation.
Nunavut Tourism
CanNor funding: $39,000
Nunavut Tourism used this funding to train twelve of their members on topics such as using social media to market their business; the basics of running a small business; working together to deliver a better product; and funding assistance programs available to tourism operators. It helped members strengthen their tourism offerings in traditional occupations such as arts and crafts, outfitting and guiding, and hunting and fishing.
Hamlet of Chesterfield Inlet
CanNor Investment - $14,574
The Hamlet of Chesterfield Inlet used this investment to update brochures, tour guides, CDs and maps about their community. This assisted the community in marketing their offerings and enhanced the experience of visitors to the community.
