Ottawa, June 16, 2011 – The Canada Council for the Arts announced today changes to its music production and touring programs that contribute to the visibility of Canadian professional music artists in Canada and internationally. The improved programs give the public better access to music across Canada and foster awareness and appreciation of all music forms.
This program is an expanded, more flexible version of the former Concert Production and Rehearsal Program. The program’s goal is to increase performance and recording opportunities for Canadian music artists as well as opportunities for Canadian music to be heard here and internationally.
The program now includes the opportunity to combine two activities: performing and recording. Artists will be able to apply for a grant to present and record a live concert.
As a result of this shift in the Council’s production support the Career Development Program and the Festival Programming Project Grants will no longer be offered.
Deadlines for the expanded Production Grants in Music Program are October 1 and May 15.
Music Touring Grants and International Touring Assistance in Music have been consolidated and the new program includes support for cross-border Canada/USA tours in addition to domestic and international tours.
There are now two deadlines for both national and international touring: December 1 and June 1. Artists will have two opportunities in the year to apply for a touring grant.
The changes are a result of an ongoing process of evaluation, achieved through direct consultation, peer assessment committee feedback, and ongoing contact with the music community. Staying current in meeting the needs of the broad music community is a priority for the Council.
Program guidelines and application forms will be available on the Council’s website for Production Grants in Music in early August and for the Music Touring Grants in early October.
The role of the Canada Council for the Arts is to foster and promote the study and enjoyment of, and the production of works in, the arts. To fulfill this mandate, the Council offers a broad range of grants and services to professional Canadian artists and arts organizations in music, dance, integrated arts, media arts, theatre, visual arts, and writing and publishing. It also promotes public awareness of the arts through its communications, research and arts promotion activities.
