Today, dignitaries representing the Government of Canada and Town of Comox, officially opened the Comox Recreation Centre’s Centennial Wing, a new multi-purpose recreation centre for residents of the Comox Valley.
“The Government of Canada is proud to celebrate the completion of another successful project supported by Canada’s Economic Action Plan,” said the Honourable John Duncan, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Island North and Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification. “With enhancements to the multi-purpose gymnasium, change rooms, the addition of 60 new fitness machines and 3,000 square feet of multi-purpose space, the new Comox Recreation Centre is now better able to serve the needs of this diverse community.”
“We’re excited about what we’ve done here,” said Comox Mayor Paul Ives, on behalf of the Comox town council. “The support from the community around this project has been outstanding and I think we’ve delivered a facility that everyone will be proud of and want to use.”
Funding of $950,000 was provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Town of Comox contributed an additional $1.9 million to the removal of the Centennial Wing of the 1967 Centennial Building at the Comox Recreation Centre and the building of its replacement.
The Centennial Wing was replaced with a new 12,600 square foot multi-purpose recreation centre, including upgrades to the existing recreation building and enhancements to the gym, lighting, and windows.
