Township Of Machar, Ontario, June 24, 2011 – Federal, provincial, and municipal representatives today celebrated the completion of work on the Eagle Lake Narrows Bridge.
The bridge spans the narrows of Eagle Lake and provides access to residences, as well as recreation and tourist areas, along the western portion of Eagle Lake and the entire Township of Lount. Enhancements to the bridge will not only improve its structural integrity and safety, it will also prolong its lifespan.
“This improved bridge will ensure the safe crossing of residents and visitors across Eagle Lake,” said the Honourable Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board, Minister for FedNor, and Member of Parliament for Parry Sound—Muskoka. “Our government is proud of the role we played in the restoration of the Eagle Lake Narrows Bridge and we can count on its use for years to come.”
“Community infrastructure investments are a crucial part of the Ontario government’s plan to enhance and strengthen our communities,” said Bob Chiarelli, Minister of Infrastructure. “By improving this important community asset we are boosting local tourism and improving the safety of residents throughout the area, now and in the future.”
“For nearly a hundred years the Eagle Lake Narrows Bridge has been an important connecting link for residents of Machar and Lount Townships, tourists and outdoor enthusiasts," said Mayor Maeck. "We are very appreciative of the other levels of government in sharing in the funding to rebuild this bridge. This partnership demonstrates the important value of providing safe access for people and boosts the local economy."
The governments of Canada and Ontario each committed about $181,000 toward this project. The Township of Machar is contributing the balance of the total eligible project cost of almost $545,000.
Federal funding for this project comes from the Government of Canada’s $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, which is providing funding to over 4,100 infrastructure projects across the country.
Over the last couple of months, Ontario had an increase of 38,000 jobs and the unemployment rate declined to 7.9 per cent.
