Mississauga, Ontario, June 22, 2011 – With federal and provincial representatives on hand, the City of Mississauga celebrated recent improvements to its busy Civic Centre Complex today.
Located within walking distance of Mississauga’s downtown transit terminal, the complex serves a growing and diverse metropolitan population of over 700,000. Built in 1987, it includes City Hall, the Mississauga Central Library, an underground parking garage and a spacious public square. Improvements to the complex addressed structural and design deficiencies in the parking garage, the public square and an adjacent portion of City Centre Drive. The public square – renamed “Mississauga Celebration Square” during the course of the project – underwent a significant redesign, making it an even more accessible and attractive event destination in the heart of Mississauga’s downtown.
“The Civic Centre complex represents the heart of downtown Mississauga and residents should be proud of the renovations that have breathed life into this important infrastructure,” said Wladyslaw Lizon, Member of Parliament for Mississauga East – Cooksville, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. “The Government of Canada is proud to be working with municipalities to invest in infrastructure that benefits the everyday lives of Canadians by extending the use of community facilities.”
“The Government of Ontario is proud to have helped turn Mississauga’s city centre into a premier destination for year-round public events and activities,” said the Honourable Charles Sousa, Member of Provincial Parliament for Mississauga South. “The improvements we’ve made will support a wide array of exciting events right in the heart of this diverse, dynamic city.”
“We envision the redeveloped public square as a major outdoor community centre," said Hazel McCallion, Mayor of Mississauga. "Thanks to the ISF funding partnership, we have built a vibrant event destination in downtown Mississauga for residents and visitors to enjoy for years to come. Every city has a heart, and this is ours.”
The governments of Canada and Ontario each contributed $13.3 million toward the total eligible project cost of $40 million. The City of Mississauga contributed the remaining balance.
Federal funding for this project comes from the Government of Canada’s $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, which is providing funding to over 4,100 infrastructure projects across the country.
Over the last couple of months, Ontario had an increase of 38,000 jobs and the unemployment rate declined to 7.9 per cent.
