In Honour of Parks Canada's Centennial
QUEBEC CITY (Quebec), June 22, 2011 -- In celebration of Parks Canada's 100th anniversary as the first national park service in the world, 15 concerts will be presented in Quebec this summer at national parks, national historic sites and the marine park. Whether the musical performance you attend is at 5 a.m., under the moon, at a lighthouse keeper's house, inside a military fort, in a 19th-centuary chapel or downtown, it will be an experience.
In this adventure, Parks Canada in Quebec is offering visitors a rich and diverse musical journey through our national treasures. At the heart of the offer are large-scale concerts and other more intimate ones, most of which will be held in the great outdoors.
Major Concerts
In terms of free major outdoor concerts, Montreal will lead off on July 16, when the Lachine Canal National Historic Site welcomes Les Trois Accords and Marie-Mai. On the afternoon of July 30, the Quintette de cuivres de l’Orchestre symphonique de Québec will be featuring at the Cartier-Brébeuf National Historic Site in Quebec. In the evening, at the Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park, it will be Mark Déry's turn to perform at the Marine Environment Discovery Centre in Les Escoumins. On August 5, the mind-blowing music of Patrick Watson & the Wooden Arms and the group's guests will be showcased at La Mauricie National Park. On August 20, as part of Célébrations Lévis 2011, Marc Hervieux, Mario Pelchat and La Musique du Royal 22e Régiment will perform in the Twilight Concert at the Lévis Forts National Historic Site.
Intimate Concerts
A number of intimate concerts will be enjoyed by many music lovers. At the Grosse Île and the Irish Memorial National Historic Site, spectators are invited to see none other than Yves Lambert (July 2) and Kevin Parent (July 29) at the recently restored Catholic chapel. On August 5, for Les rendez-vous amoureux, Christian Bégin and Mireille Deyglun will present, text in hand, a montage of the greatest comical and dramatic scenes from Canadian and international theatre. At the lighthouse keeper's house on Petite île au Marteau in the Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve, Vincent Vallières (July 4), Caroline Jomphe (July 11) and Keven Landry (July 18) will perform for about 60 spectators.
Unique Concepts
Unique concerts are also planned. At the Marine Environment Discovery Centre of the Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park, two jazz concerts will be presented during full-moon evenings for the Jazz Under the Moon event, facing the majestic St. Lawrence River. Guests include the Marie-Claire Durand Quintet (July 16), as well as Cynthia Harvey and Éric Savard (August 13).
At 5 a.m. on August 14, at Forillon National Park's Cap-Bon-Ami in Gaspésie, the sun will rise with Leif Vollebekk. Lastly, on August 26, the Forges du Saint-Maurice National Historic Site in Trois-Rivières will present the show La Mauricie en musique, histoire et images with the Duo Contra-Danza and Théâtre 3R—a great way to cap off Parks Canada's 100th anniversary celebrations.
