Update: June 21, 2011 – This outbreak appears to be over.
In total, 14 cases were reported as part of this outbreak and the last reported case became ill on Apr 20, 2011. The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), in collaboration with provincial/territorial partners, will continue to monitor for and investigate any new cases of E. coli that may be a part of this outbreak.
It remains important that Canadians not eat any of the walnuts listed in CFIA's Health Hazard Alerts.
However, there is no indication that other raw, shelled walnuts pose a health risk and therefore it is no longer recommended that Canadians roast raw, shelled walnuts prior to eating them.
