Tweed, Ontario, June 4, 2011 – Federal, provincial, and municipal representatives were present today at the official opening of the new Tweed Public Library.
The new, fully accessible facility has nearly tripled the community’s library space, growing from 1,700 to more than 5,000 square feet. Featuring timed and low energy-use lighting, hot water on demand and a rainwater harvesting system, the building is a model of energy efficiency and sustainability for its community. It also boasts high-speed internet, increased collections space, more computer stations, and an expanded children’s area.
“An inscription over a library door in ancient Thebes read ‘The Medicine Chest of the Soul’. Libraries certainly are that”, said Daryl Kramp, Member of Parliament for Prince Edward-Hastings. “I am thrilled by this investment in the Tweed Public Library and I’m sure that members of the community will experience countless hours of enjoyment and education within its walls.”
“Through our Open Ontario Plan, we’re building foundations for success and prosperity throughout our province,” said the Honourable Leona Dombrowsky, Member of Provincial Parliament for Prince Edward—Hastings. “The Government of Ontario is proud to be part of this new modern library, which will be a community hub where all families can learn and grow for many years to come in Tweed.”
“A new library for Tweed is a dream come true and a great asset to our municipality,” said Jo-Anne Albert, Reeve of the Municipality of Tweed. “We are very thankful for the financial contributions from the provincial and federal governments under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund program. Without this financial support, a new library would not have become a reality for many years.”
The governments of Canada and Ontario have each contributed over $300,000 toward this project through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund. The Municipality of Tweed contributed the balance of the total eligible project cost of $900,000.
As part of the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund is providing funding to over 4,100 infrastructure projects across the country, and is delivered by Infrastructure Canada.
Since employment turned the corner in May 2009, Ontario has created nearly 300,000 jobs. This means Ontario has recovered all of the jobs lost during the recession. Ontario's stimulus investments contributed to this job recovery.
