Today is the United Nations World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. Observed since 1995, this day promotes public awareness about international cooperation to combat desertification, land degradation and the effects of drought.
This year's theme, "Forests keep drylands working", reminds us that desertification and the associated loss of vegetation can significantly, and adversely, affect the health of humans and livestock, agricultural productivity, and many other economic activities. In developing countries, this can lead to famine, social disruption and loss of life.
Through CIDA, the Government of Canada recognizes the impact of desertification and land degradation on the agricultural sector in developing countries and works to support smallholder farmers.
