Hamilton, Ontario, July 19, 2011 – Federal, provincial and municipal representatives gathered in Hamilton today to celebrate the successful renovation of the Coronation Arena and Outdoor Pool Complex.
The renovated arena offers greater accessibility to visitors of all ages. Other improvements include a new ice-making system and upgraded mechanical, electrical and lighting systems, all of which will help improve energy efficiency and extend the building’s life span.
Outside the arena, the outdoor pool complex has been completely reconstructed – a new heated, in-ground pool is complemented by brand new change room facilities, a life guard office and a large pool deck. Like the arena, it is also fully accessible.
“Public pools and arenas promote physical activity and fun, which encourages the growth of healthy communities,” said David Sweet, MP for Ancaster–Dundas–Flamborough–Westdale, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure, and Communities. “Recognizing the importance of supporting recreational projects that contribute to a high quality of life, the Government of Canada is proud to invest in municipal infrastructure that will provide many opportunities for the young and young at heart to stay active, and develop new skills and abilities through community programs.”
“The Ontario government is proud to expand opportunities for sports and recreation in our communities,” said Ted McMeekin, Member of Provincial Parliament for Ancaster–Dundas–Flamborough–Westdale. “Our support for this project will ensure that families and their children can enjoy a range of activities in a dynamic community hub for many years to come.”
“I would like to thank the federal and provincial governments for their ongoing support and investment in Hamilton's recreation infrastructure,” said Mayor Bob Bratina. “We want to make sure our children and their families have the best recreational facilities possible, but we couldn't do it without the help of our Government partners.”
The governments of Canada and Ontario each committed $1 million toward the project. The City of Hamilton contributed the balance of the total eligible project cost of $3 million.
Federal funding for this project comes from the Government of Canada’s $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, which is supporting more than 4,100 infrastructure projects across the country.
In June, Ontario had an increase of more than 40,000 jobs and the unemployment rate declined to 7.7 percent.
