Ottawa, Ontario (July 9, 2011) –The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, issued the following statement today:
"I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the 18th annual celebration of Nunavut Day. On this day in 1993, Parliament passed the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act (NLCA) and the Nunavut Act, setting the stage for Nunavut to become Canada's newest territory. Since that time, the Government of Canada has worked with the Government of Nunavut , Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. , and many other partners to realize the potential of Canada's newest territory.
As we know, to build a strong future we must acknowledge the past. Foremost in my mind today will be the historic apology made last summer by our Government regarding the relocation of High Arctic communities. I was honoured to visit Resolute Bay and Grise Fiord for the unveiling of official monuments dedicated to the Inuit families who endured these hardships.
As we celebrate Nunavut Day, it is also important to acknowledge that we lost an important leader earlier this year when Jose Kusugak passed away in January. I am confident his legacy will continue on for generations to come.
On behalf of all Canadians, I wish Nunavummiut, their families and visitors a happy Nunavut day. I encourage people to enjoy the many festivities that will be taking place across the territory to mark this day."
