Representatives of the federal and provincial governments along with civic officials put shovels in the ground today to mark construction of the new Fundy Civic Centre in Sussex.
The Honourable Rob Moore, Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal, on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and La Francophonie; the Honourable David Alward, Premier of New Brunswick; Ralph Carr, Mayor of Sussex; and board members of the Fundy Civic Centre attended the sod turning ceremony for the new centre.
“The health of the Canadian economy and support for jobs and growth is our Government’s number one priority,” said MP Moore. “Investments in projects like the Fundy Civic Centre generate employment during their construction phase and create valuable community infrastructure that families and local residents will benefit from for years to come. From swimming classes and yoga instruction to community meeting space this facility will add to the quality of life that the people of Sussex enjoy.”
"The Fundy Civic Centre will give the communities in this region a place to come together and develop," said Alward. "This project is an investment in the wellness of our youth, seniors and families."
When completed, the Fundy Civic Centre will provide the residents of Sussex and surrounding areas with a community meeting place, an indoor aquatic facility and fitness centre, including a walking track. As a key hub for a broad range of local activity, the Centre has a valuable role to play in contributing to the economic and social development of the community. Economic activity tied to the various events and initiatives supported by the Centre will benefit local entrepreneurs from the food service sector to local retailers, tourism operators as well as other service industry members. "Sussex residents are proud supporters of the future Fundy Civic Centre from the beginning" said Mayor Carr. "Our residents and Sussex Council are excited and looking forward to the construction of this over the next few months. We are proud of the future facility, the work of the Fundy Civic Centre Board and the benefits this new facility will bring to the Town and the region."
The Government of Canada along with the Province of New Brunswick are investing $2 million to allow the Town of Sussex to move forward with the Fundy Civic Centre project, improving recreational opportunities for residents. This support will cover the increased costs associated with the project originally announced in July 2007.
In 2007, the federal, provincial and municipal governments each announced $1.3 million investment to support the project. An additional $300,000 was also provided by the Province of New Brunswick’s Regional Development Corporation. Contributions from Sussex Corner, Norton and the surrounding local service districts as well as a successful fundraising campaign are also contributing to the realization of the project.
