Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, Ontario, August 9, 2011 – Federal, provincial and municipal representatives gathered in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory today to celebrate the rehabilitation of Bayshore Road.
The road’s new asphalt surface will allow surface water to drain more effectively and a wider shoulder will make the road safer for pedestrians and cyclists and reduce vehicle idling time. These improvements will help to accommodate increased traffic from surrounding residential and commercial developments.
“The rehabilitation of Bayshore Road provides Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory with a modern roadway that supports residential and commercial development and encourages tourism and recreation,” said Daryl Kramp, Member of Parliament for Prince Edward-Hastings, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. “Our government is proud to have contributed to this important infrastructure project that created jobs and can accommodate future growth in this community.”
“The McGuinty government is pleased to have supported the rehabilitation of Bayshore Road, which now provides drivers, cyclists and pedestrians with a safer, more accessible and enjoyable commuter experience,” said the Honourable Leona Dombrowsky, MPP for Prince Edward—Hastings. “This priority project is one of many our government is funding to improve the quality of life in our communities and provide modern, more efficient infrastructure for visitors and local families.”
"This project is a tangible example of the strong and positive relationship that we have built over the years with our neighbours the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte,” said Jo-Anne Albert, Warden for the County of Hastings. “Of course this project would not have been possible without the financial support of the provincial and federal governments and our members Daryl Kramp and Leona Dombrowsky. They continue to be incredible champions for our County."
“The Bayshore Road has high traffic counts, particularly during the spring, summer and fall months and the rehabilitation makes the road safer for traffic and pedestrians,” said Chief R. Donald Maracle. “The Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte wish to thank the Federal and Provincial Governments as well as Hastings County for this needed improvement.”
The governments of Canada and Ontario are each contributing one-third of total eligible project costs, up to a maximum of $228,114. The County of Hastings contributed the balance of the total project cost of $684,342.
Federal funding for this project comes from the Government of Canada’s Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, which is providing funding to over 4,100 infrastructure projects across the country.
