Côte-Saint-Luc, Quebec, August 28, 2011 – Senator Judith Seidman, acting on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, and Lawrence S. Bergman, Member of the Quebec National Assembly for D’Arcy-McGee and Chair of the Quebec Government Caucus, acting on behalf of Laurent Lessard, Minister of Municipal Affairs, Regions and Land Occupancy, took the opportunity of the official inauguration of the Côte-Saint-Luc Intergenerational/Aquatic Centre to recall the $11,571,880 in combined government funding awarded to the City of Côte‑Saint‑Luc for this project under the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund – Quebec.
The project involved the construction of an intergenerational and aquatic centre covering 5,456 square metres in the City of Côte-Saint-Luc. The new sports and recreational complex is equipped with portable bleachers that seat some 200 people, a recreational pool, an indoor terrace adjacent to the aquatic pools, multipurpose community halls, a physical fitness room, and dance and warm-up studios.
Boasting modern equipment tailored to contemporary indoor physical and fitness activities, the Centre houses all Côte-Saint-Luc sports and recreational facilities. It offers Côte-Saint-Luc residents a variety of activities for people of all ages, including persons aged 55¯and over. Students from nearby schools and residents of neighbouring communities and boroughs are also welcome to enjoy the new Centre’s activities and services.
“I am sure this new complex will meet the needs of Côte-Saint-Luc residents for years to come. Through its funding for this project, the Government of Canada is once again delivering on its commitment to renew public infrastructure. These infrastructures are necessary to community life because they create a healthy and safe living environment in which to practice sports,” said Senator Judith Seidman.
“It gives me great satisfaction to participate today in the official inauguration of the Côte-Saint-Luc Intergenerational/Aquatic Centre. I hope these new installations will benefit the entire community and contribute to improving their quality of life in all regards: social, sports, community and cultural. By financially supporting Côte-Saint-Luc’s project, the Government of Quebec is unequivocally committing to intergenerational equity and sustainable development. This additional major project is part of the Plan québécois des infrastructures for the upgrade, renewal and maintenance of public infrastructure in Quebec,” added MNA Lawrence S. Bergman.
Côte-Saint-Luc is the Island of Montréal’s third largest city and its population is growing faster than that of Quebec as a whole. It was therefore important that the City have the necessary infrastructure to meet the needs of its increasing population.
Completion of this project necessitated an overall eligible investment of $17,357,821. The governments of Quebec and Canada each contributed $5,785,940, for a total of $11,571,880 in combined government funding, while the City of Côte-Saint-Luc assumed the remaining third, or $5,785,941, of the project’s costs.
The Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund – Quebec is a cost-sharing initiative aimed at funding infrastructure projects in communities with fewer than 100,000 ;inhabitants. These communities are thus able to use this assistance to improve infrastructure that is in major need of revitalization, including water treatment plants, water supply systems and cultural and sports centres.
The contribution announced today by the Government of Canada was awarded through Canada’s Economic Action Plan. For more on this plan, visit www.actionplan.gc.ca.
