Ottawa, August 15, 2011 — The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement recognizing National Acadian Day:
“Today is an important day for members of Canada’s 350,000-strong Acadian community as they celebrate their history, heritage and culture.
“The celebration of National Acadian Day on August 15 coincides with and draws inspiration from the Catholic observance of Assumption Day. Also known as the feast day of the Assumption of Mary, it is believed that on this day the Virgin Mary, patron saint of the Acadians, ascended directly into Heaven following her death.
“For all Canadians, today provides an excellent opportunity to appreciate the history and achievements of the proud Acadian people, and to reflect on the tremendous contributions of Canada’s vibrant Acadian community to our country’s rich and diverse heritage.
“As Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said, ‘Acadia’s history has helped shape that of Canada. The French presence in North America owes much to those early Acadian settlers who showed an unwavering commitment to pass on their culture, language and traditions to their children. We see that same pride and determination from today’s Acadians as they ensure that their unique culture continues to thrive for generations to come.’
“As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes for a happy, healthy and festive National Acadian Day to Acadians everywhere.”
