News Releases and Media Advisories
Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador - 28 November 2011 - The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and La Francophonie, today announced funding to promote sport fishing destinations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. More sport fishing destinations of the region will soon be seen by audiences around North America, thanks in part to this investment in the Newfoundland and Labrador Outfitters Association Inc. (NLOA).
“Economic growth and job creation are our Government’s priorities. This investment supports the development of growing sectors, like the outfitting industry, which are helping to build a stronger economy in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Minister Valcourt. “Our support of the Newfoundland and Labrador Outfitters Association (NLOA) will help promote the province’s outfitters and operators and their unique and exciting product to a worldwide market.”
The funding will support production of The New Fly Fisher television program. This program is the most widely- distributed fishing television show in Canada, and reaches more than 70 million households each week across North America. Through this project, nine episodes were filmed in various sport fishing locations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, promoting local outfitters, operators, destinations and tourism attractions in the province. Stock footage and other materials will also be used in various print and online publications, and at industry tradeshows around Canada, the United States and Europe.
“The videos that have been produced by The New Fly Fisher will be invaluable tools in helping us showcase the world- class fishing, scenery and hospitality we have in this province,” said Ron Hicks, president of the NLOA. “ACOA funding has been instrumental in making this marketing project possible.”
Members of the NLOA will gather in Corner Brook, NL this week for the association’s annual general meeting, convention and auction. This year’s event takes place from November 29 to December 1 at the Glynmill Inn, and will feature a mini trade show, silent and live auction, gala dinner, and professional development sessions.
The Government of Canada’s support of $100,000 is being provided through ACOA’s Business Development Program (BDP).
