OTTAWA — The Government of Canada, along with the governments of Quebec and Ontario today officially released the final report of the high-speed rail study for the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor. The purpose of the study was to determine the feasibility of a high-speed passenger rail system linking Quebec City and Windsor, Ontario.
The study was conducted by EcoTrain, which is a consortium of five consulting firms: Dessau; MMM Group (formerly Marshall Macklin Monaghan Limited); Wilbur Smith & Assoc.; Deutsche Bahn International; and KPMG. The joint study included an assessment of high-speed train technologies; potential routes and stations; traffic forecasts; and financial and economic (cost-benefit) analyses. Additionally, the study evaluated the impact of high-speed rail from a socioeconomic, environmental and competitor perspective.
The study found that high-speed rail is technically feasible in the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor but will require significant public expenditure. With these study findings, the Government of Canada will take the time necessary to carefully consider possible next steps.
