Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board Hears From Public in Kuujjuaq

News Release

Ref. #2-3575

Kuujjuaq, Québec (November 16, 2011) – The Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board held a public meeting recently in Kuujjuaq to hear the views of Northerners on the Nutrition North Canada program. Approximately 40 people attended the November 8th event.

As part of their visit to the northern community, Board members took a tour of the local food stores, NorthMart and Depanneur Newviq'vi, to find out more about food prices and availability.

The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, expressed thanks to the Advisory Board for continuing its valuable work in meeting with the public to hear their views.

"The comments and suggestions gathered during this public meeting and from other public engagements are important to the Nutrition North Canada program," said Minister Duncan. "I want to thank everyone who took the time to provide their input. It will ensure that the Nutrition North Canada program continues to be dynamic and responsive to the views of Northerners.

"This visit to Kuujjuaq has been very helpful for the Board to see how Nutrition North Canada works day-to-day in a Northern community," said Nellie Cournoyea, Advisory Board Vice-Chair. "I am committed to making sure what the Board heard from the people of Kuujjuaq and others from across the North is taken into consideration," added Cournoyea.

Public meetings are intended to ensure the Government of Canada receives input from northern food consumers by encouraging consumers to provide direct feedback to the Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board.

Representatives from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada and Health Canada were also on hand to provide updates on the program and to answer questions–similar to what happened during the public meeting held in Iqaluit.

The Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board was created to support engagement with Northerners, to promote the transparency of the program, and to provide information and advice to help guide the Federal Government in the delivery of the Nutrition North Canada program.

The Advisory Board will continue to meet with stakeholders, listen to their feedback, and advise the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. The next public meeting will be scheduled in early 2012.
