Ottawa, Ontario, December 22, 2011—The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, today announced the appointment of Mr. Justice Douglas Rutherford as the new Chairman of the Pension Appeals Board.
“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Justice Douglas Rutherford as Chairman of the Pension Appeals Board,” said Minister Finley. “His experience, leadership and knowledge will be valuable assets for the Board.”
A graduate of the University of Toronto, the Honourable Justice Douglas Rutherford has worked in the legal field for more than 40 years. During his distinguished career, he served as both a lawyer and a prosecutor before being nominated to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in 1991. That same year, he was also appointed Vice‑Chairman of the Pension Appeals Board, a position that he occupied prior to this appointment.
The Pension Appeals Board, an administrative tribunal that is independent from the Department of Human Resources and Skills Development, is the final opportunity for appeal under the Canada Pension Plan. Its members are federal or provincial superior court judges, or former judges, and are appointed by the Governor in Council. Members include a chairman, a vice-chairman, up to ten permanent members and additional temporary members as required.
“Mr. Justice Rutherford will undoubtedly bring a wealth of expertise to the Pension Appeals Board. His reputation in the legal field is firmly established,” said Minister Finley.
