Prime Minister Harper met today with President Widmer-Schlumpf of Switzerland on the margins of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos. This was the first meeting for the two leaders.
Prime Minister Harper and President Widmer-Schlumpf discussed the situation in the Eurozone and the overall global economic situation. Both leaders expressed their concern with the ongoing European economic and financial crisis and the need for decisive action on the part of Eurozone countries to restore market confidence and to avoid triggering another global recession.
The strong bilateral relations between Canada and Switzerland were emphasized in the discussions and both leaders expressed potential for strengthening economic cooperation.
Deepening Canadian-Swiss cooperation on global issues was also highlighted, including promoting human rights and democratic governance and working together to respond to humanitarian issues. They also discussed the situation in Iran and related sanctions.
