Municipalities west of Winnipeg to enjoy better water thanks to stimulus funding
RM of St. François Xavier, Manitoba, March 19, 2012 — Representatives from the federal, provincial and municipal governments gathered today in the Rural Municipality of St. François Xavier to mark the completion of upgrades to the Cartier Regional Co-Op Water Treatment Plant.
The Cartier Regional Water Co-Op provides water to nearly 10,000 customers throughout the municipalities of Cartier, St. François Xavier, Headingley, Grey, Rockwood, and Rosser. Upgrades to the plant were necessary in order to modernize the system, and to ensure that the plant could meet ever-increasing water production demands throughout the region.
“Projects like this clearly demonstrate the commitment by the Province of Manitoba to support economic growth in our rural areas by investing in important infrastructure like the upgrades to the Cartier Regional Water Co-op plant,” said Ron Lemieux, Manitoba Minister for Local Government. “Not only will these upgrades improve water treatment capabilities but it will also ensure the delivery of safe drinking water to more homes in this area. Our province will continue to focus on providing clean drinking water to all communities in Manitoba.”
“Our government was proud to support these upgrades to the Cartier Regional Co-Op Water Plant,” declared Candice Hoeppner, MP for Portage-Lisgar, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. “Not only will this project help the water plant meet future demands, but area residents will have access to clean, safe drinking water for years to come.”
“With a served population of close to 10,000, the new water treatment process and vastly improved distribution system will satisfy demand for many years to come,” stated Roland Rasmussen, Reeve of the RM of Cartier. “The improvement to the quality of water will be noticed by our served population, and in terms of taste and water softness rivals the best of water provided anywhere in Manitoba. Funding from the two higher levels of government made this project possible.”
The governments of Canada and Manitoba each committed over $2.27 million to this project under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund. The remaining $2.77 million will be borne by the Cartier Regional Water Co-op and repaid from water rates.
The Infrastructure Stimulus Fund is part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. Thanks to the Plan, and our strong economic and financial fundamentals, the Canadian economy has recovered from the global recession better than most other industrialized countries. Canada has been a leader amongst G-7 countries throughout the recovery with more than 610,000 net new jobs created since July 2009.
InManitobaalone, close to $140 million was committed to 111 projects in communities across the province. In every corner of the Province, jobs were created when the economy needed them most.
