Government of Canada Invests In Northwest Territories Tourism Initiatives
CanNor-11-026
Yellowknife, NWT (March 16, 2012) – The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) and Minister of Health today announced a multi-year investment to enhance tourism in the Northwest Territories and increase visits by Canadian and international tourists to the Territory.
The Government of Canada is proud to support activities that will help the Northwest Territories build a strong and dynamic tourism industry,
said Minister Aglukkaq. This investment will stimulate and grow the tourism sector which will in turn create and sustain a variety of business and job opportunities for Northerners.
This funding will help us further our marketing efforts and promotion of Spectacular Northwest Territories to the rest of Canada and the world,
said Jenni Bruce, Chair of Northwest Territories Tourism. It has enabled us to initiate some exciting international and domestic marketing initiatives such as our most recent My Spectacular NWT campaign. The funding will also support other trade and media promotions, and market readiness training for our tour operators. We welcome this investment from CanNor and appreciate their ongoing support to develop the tourism industry in the NWT.
Over three years, Northwest Territories Tourism (NWTT) will use funding from CanNor to implement a marketing strategy to boost tourism in the Northwest Territories. NWTT will carry out marketing activities that are geared toward specific target markets in North America, Europe and Asia.
This investment supports the Government's commitments under the Federal Tourism Strategy, by helping to deliver on the Strategy's four priority areas: inspiring the world to explore Canada; making it easier to travel to Canada; encouraging development of extraordinary tourism experiences; and fostering an exceptional tourism workforce.
Investment in this project is made possible through CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) Initiative, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building in all three territories.
SINED is one of several economic development initiatives within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development and research.
